Pilates
Joseph Humbertus Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He spent his childhood fighting rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. Determined to become physically immune to his ailments, Joe studied yoga, Zen meditation and rigorous exercise regimes of the ancient Greeks and Romans. By his teens Joe was excelling in skiing, diving and gymnastics and followed on to develop a system of exercise while interned as a prisoner of war during WW1.
What is Pilates?
The Pilates method of
exercise is essentially
a mind-body centering
technique that emphasises
the importance of beginning
movement from a central
core of stability, namely
the lumbar (low back)
and pelvic region.
From this central principle, the Pilates method works by challenging the core by using upper and lower limb movements as well as adding resistance using exercise bands and various types of equipment as the person improves.
What are the benefits of Pilates ?
-
It’s great for low back pain as it will help to prevent episodes of pain by strengthening the stabilisers of the low back which have become weakened.
-
It improves posture and changes body shape with time. It is also a great way to slow down and relax, thinking about yourself for a change!
-
Pilates is for every one of all ages and ability. It can be practised for the duration of pregnancy and used post-natally to regain body shape and strength.
-
It can improve performance and is practised in elite sporting circles such as premiership football and athletics, as well as in ballet and rugby training!
